Sad street art – The Artsology Blog

As I was walking down 7th Avenue near 21st Street in Manhattan recently, I noticed this orange wooden pylon with a sad-looking blue “face” on it – would you agree that it looks like a face? It looks to me like a nearly-closed eye looking down with a mark where a nostril would be (see below right). At any rate, it was also tagged with a message from a street artist named Mario, which reads “When it reigns, I’m poor.” This is a play on the phrase, “when it rains, it pours,” which refers to the idea that when something bad occurs, it usually occurs more than once and often within a short period of time. What do you think it means in this case? Who is “reigning” that makes Mario poor? Or am I reading too much into this? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
