LOUDONVILLE — In a change from usual scheduling, ice sculptures for the 2020 Mohican Winterfest will not be set up until Saturday morning.
Valerie Spreng, executive director of the sponsoring Loudonville Mohican Chamber of Commerce, announced via email this week that the ice sculptures will not be put on display at the usual Friday evening time due to the weather.
Forecast for Mohican Winterfest, now in its 13th year, is about as bad as it could get for an event whose success is contingent on the weather. Soaking rain all day Saturday, and temperatures projected to rise to 60 degrees portend a rapid meltdown of the sculptures, and soggy, unpleasant conditions for the throngs expected to watch ice carving demonstrations.
The event will go on, however, starting Friday afternoon. The Mohican Train Expo, an event held simultaneously with Mohican Winterfest for the past 10 years, will start in the Loudonville Fair Building on North Water Street at 4 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. It also will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
Also on Friday, American Legion Post 257 will host a steak fry from 5 to 7 p.m.; the Ugly Bunny Winery will feature entertainer Brad Fuller from 6 to 9 p.m. and will hold a euchre tournament, starting at 6:30 p.m.; and the Ohio Theatre will show the new film on the classic book “Little Women” at 7 p.m. That movie will be shown Saturday at 7 p.m., too.
In addition to the ice sculpture setup Saturday morning, ice carving demonstrations will be given on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Central Park, as well as many other activities. Mohican Historical Society will offer tours of both the Cleo Redd Fisher Museum and the Workman Cabin in Central Park from noon to 4 p.m. Loudonville Public Library will hold stuffed animal workshops at 10:30 a.m., and 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.; United Methodist Church of Loudonville, located on the north side of Central Park, will serve an a la carte lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a vintage snowmobile show is planned in Central Park from noon to 4 p.m.; the American Legion Riders will hold a poker walk from 1 to 4 p.m.; the Ugly Bunny Winery will feature entertainer Henry J starting at 6:30 p.m.; and a traditional Winterfest event, the Snow Ball Dance with DJ Rockin’ Al, gets underway in the American Legion starting at 7 p.m.
In addition to the continued ice sculpture display Sunday, “Little Women” will be shown at Ohio Theatre at 2 p.m. and Mohican State Park will host its annual Mid-Winter Hike from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting at the park commissary off Ohio 3 south. Hot soup will be served at the end of the hike.
Winterfest is one of the major special event productions of the Loudonville Mohican Chamber of Commerce.
